I've given up at explaining why a piece of art works, only because it has mystery for those who see it and none for those who do not.
A piece of art can be refined with great care and skill, yet have no story. While others can be crude using whatever medium is at the artists' disposal, yet it may hold the viewer long enough to engage in the work.
There is no formula. Just as there is no formula for summoning an idea. When you are ready, the idea comes. You then begin to recreate this etherial image in an honest way. Most of the time you are unsuccessful. When you do hit on something, it should show you something new about yourself that you didn't know was there. Everything else is practice and preparation.
