Tom Tosti draws on jazz festival experience

A black marker is streaked across the page in long, fluid lines, flushing out the lid of a grand piano. Lighter brown, sideways strokes depict a bass, one that a man in a suit and glasses looks to be hugging. A black blotch marks the bass drum, next to smaller drums that seem to be suspended in air. A head with black hair peeks out from behind a cymbal.

The brown squares on the page are indicative of the paneled walls of Kilbourn Hall. Sitting at the piano is a well-dressed, dark-skinned man with speckled hair, easily recognizable as Monty Alexander during his Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival appearance in 2009. You can see the trio in movement through the frantic lines of pen. In that movement, sounds of swinging and grooving Jamaican-influenced jazz can be heard.

The picture is a sketch by area artist Tom Tosti, who attends the jazz festival each year with white paper pads and colored pens in tow. He busily draws the artists in action during their sets, challenging himself to get the picture right in the condensed hour of a jazz set, often in less-than-ideal drawing conditions. He's been sketching artists for each of the festival's nine years, starting with the event's first-ever show in 2002 of pianist Renee Rosnes.

Opinion: A Community of Artists

I believe strongly that most artists need to work within a community of artists to best hone their skills. The discussing, borrowing, colaborating, and working on ideas and theories together with other creative people, matures and molds the artist in ways he cannot achieve on his own. Knowledge is acumulative and always changing. We each hold only such a small portion of what is out there that we need to draw from each others’ life experiences and impressions if we want to shape our work into something meaningful to others.

Making it Click: Yoga & Photography Immersion August 26-28, 2011

Join internationally recognized, professional photographer and teacher, Bruno Chalifour, and well-known yoga teacher and life coach, Carla Giambrone, for a weekend that will transform your yoga practice, the way you see and experience photography, and possibly your life.

Beyond physical poses (asanas) the yoga workshop focuses on cultivating and defining authenticity - on the mat and off. The progression of classes will greet you where you are, and take you further than you thought possible. We will modify or intensify to meet individual needs. Ideal for all levels - beginners will feel very comfortable and seasoned yogis will be challenged.

Experience an athletic, invigorating, and empowering vinyasa yoga practice that incorporates breath, flow and focus, and is designed to create a deep sense of stillness and presence. Feel stronger, more open-hearted, connected, and at peace after each session.

Beyond technical questions, the photography workshop focuses on what transforms the making and the viewing of a good photograph into a revelatory experience. To the trained eye and mind, photographs become small epiphanies. They disclose some of the wonders and mysteries of the world as well as reveal layers of their makers' attention, intuition and intentions.

The focus will be on content and how multi-layered images can be created and shared thanks to the understanding of what defines the essence of photography: the use of light, the frame, composition, vantage point, the decisive moment, contemplation, relationship with the subject, connection with one's inner world.

To photograph is to put on the same axis, in the same breath, the eye, the mind and the heart. (inspired by Henri Cartier-Bresson)

Through visual exercises, assignments and group feed-back on produced images, Bruno Chalifour invites you beyond the frame and surface of photographs.

Space is limited to give each participant individual and real attention. Register soon to reserve your spot.

"It is the compelling zest of high adventure and in creative action, that man finds his supreme joys."    Antoine de Saint-Exupery

"On ne voit bien qu'avec le coeur, l'essentiel est invisible pour les yeux."

Art as a universal language

I think of all art as stories in some universal language. Universal but not always clear. Writer Carolyn Henderson advocates that an artist should have a two or three sentence description of each piece of art in a show ready and handy to use for those who need it. I feel the same way. I know that most visual artists are better at image making than sentence making, myself for sure, but just consider it another medium or tool that is needed for your art to do really well. Like a journal it helps you sort out feelings about your art work.  It also steers the viewer in the correct direction if the viewer was not clear on the path you would have him take.

Comments about Critiquing Art

I've given up at explaining why a piece of art works, only because it has mystery for those who see it and none for those who do not.

A piece of art can be refined with great care and skill, yet have no story.  While others can be crude using whatever medium is at the artists' disposal, yet it may hold the viewer long enough to engage in the work.

There is no formula.  Just as there is no formula for summoning an idea.  When you are ready, the idea comes.  You then begin to recreate this etherial image in an honest way.  Most of the time you are unsuccessful.  When you do hit on something, it should show you something new about yourself that you didn't know was there. Everything else is practice and preparation.
