  1. Comments from one of the founder's of Landmark Society's Ghost Walk, David Boyer:

For 2011, this annual event is just for one (1) weekend. So please mark your calendars and embrace this wonderful local history porch performance tradition since October 1994. Ages 8 and up, please.

Special qualities of The Landmark Society of Western NY's, "Ghost Walk:"

    a) It's a FUNdraiser for all the good programs that The Landmark Society does.
    b) Incorporates local talent who perform it like any other play or musical.
    c) The only Halloween based local history event that happens on public streets, residential porches and sidewalks at night.
    d) Incorporates over 50 volunteers (including the East Avenue area home owners who generously allow the use of their home exteriors).
    e) The actors, directors and selected others do get a stipend for their time and tremendous talent.
    f) Reflects the latest thinking of how to make local history more memorable in the mind by theatrical performance.
    g) Families have reported that they also just enjoy being outside amid the fun and hearing the Fall leaves rustle at their feet.

Many personal connections are in The Landmark Society's Ghost Walk. The format came from observing a Ghost Walk running in Warren, Ohio back in 1993. Cindy and David Boyer asked to bring their format to Rochester, NY. The Landmark Society decided to add the program to their list of local history programs. It sold out the first year and many other years later. Noted actor and educator Thomas Bohrer has frequently performed in The Landmark Society's Ghost Walk. In 2004, Cindy Boyer wrote the book, "Ghost Walk: Chilling Tales from Rochester's Past. The book of selected 13 stories is still available.

There are inspired adapters now of this format. Syracuse NY has a Ghost Walk based on a visit and observation of The Landmark Society's program. Landmark Society's Ghost Walk gave birth to the format of the African-American history event in February, "Walk the Walk." That event continues to inspire the lives of tens of thousands of students.

So go with the BEST and the ORIGINAL (we think at least) public street local history program in Western NY hosted by The Landmark Society.

See you there! ~~ Dave Boyer.
