Job Opening - The Arts & Cultural Council

The Arts & Cultural Council for Greater Rochester announces the availability of the following position:

Position Title: Grants and Database Coordinator
Classification: Full-time Exempt Position

Job Responsibilities

Grants
• Assist with the management of the Arts & Cultural Council’s grant allocation program, which includes providing technical assistance to potential grant applicants, organizing grant panels, and tracking and auditing funded projects

Database
• Responsible for the day-to-day maintenance of the organization’s database systems, including entering gifts, creating and generating reports, and coordinating mailings
• Manage and track acknowledgments for all areas of the organization, including development and membership

Development
• Assist in all areas of development, including annual appeals, membership drives, and special events

Other Responsibilities
• Assist with the daily maintenance of the organization’s website
• Assist with daily mail and cash receipt processing
• Assist with other projects and assignments as needed

Qualifications
• 3-5 years of database management experience required
• Excellent attention to detail, including written and oral communication skills
• Strong organizational and planning skills
• Good interpersonal skills
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access) required, and experience with Adobe Creative Suite (Dreamweaver, InDesign, Photoshop) preferred
• Bachelors degree or equivalent preferred

“THE FINGER LAKES: ABOVE AND BELOW

Living in a unique geological region where, side by side, eleven valleys were carved to a depth capable of holding water two million years ago by a retreating glacier, inspired this body of work. Because of their long finger-like shapes and their proximity to one another, the Native Americans referred to these bodies of water as the Finger Lakes. Most of these lakes have shorelines dotted with residents and business, while others have been spared development and represent the most pristine qualities of the natural world.

Other than admiring the exposed shale in waterfalls and gorges, I never gave much thought to the geology of the Finger Lakes beyond this, but recently I've felt compelled to understand more about the layers of shale deep beneath the surface. The beauty, health and vitality of this region is dependent on a good understanding of this geology, as we are faced with decisions related to future energy harvest, using technologies which greatly compromise the integrity of the earth.

Running below my pastel paintings of each aerial contour and related icons of the Finger Lakes, is a representation of this region's shale beds. It shows the many faults, joints and fractures connecting to each other, serving as conduits capable of carrying liquids and gases to unknown, large distances, with potentially harmful impact along the way. You, as the viewer, are invited to determine the value of fracturing this shale for natural gas extraction.

The extraordinary beauty of the Finger Lakes region, having captured my interest for many years, resulted in a plethora of landscape paintings, some of which are included in this show to round out my experience and expression of this natural wonder.

Mexico in Black and White and Color

For my first trip to Mexico, in 1977, I brought 50 rolls of black and white film and 5 rolls of color. I'm a documentary photographer and prefer black and white for my work. By my third trip, I was bringing 100 rolls of each. During that trip, I started to learn how to take photographs of the amazing colors and textures in Mexico and eventually even photographed people in color. My primary work in Mexico is documenting life in el campo where people are literally struggling to survive. But it would be a mistake to close my eyes to the beauty that exists alongside the poverty.
