Taking Play Seriously

The Taking Play Seriously Committee at Nazareth College is looking for participants who are advocates of and/or are interested in "play" for the Taking Play Seriously Community Forum to be held early in 2012 at The Strong Museum of Play.

Fostering play in business, education, health, science, etc., helps foster creativity, community, relationships, and learning throughout the life span.

It has been argued (Fredrickson, 2001) that "playfulness facilitates the experience of positive emotions, which in turn allows for broadening a persons' action and thought connections and facilitates the development of resources."

Using this broad definition of play we are currently identifying potential participants, at all levels, for our Taking Play Seriously Community Forum.

We are now in  the final stages of planning the Taking Play Seriously Community Forum that will bring together a group of diverse stakeholders to determine the current issues that help or hinder play across the life span.

We plan on bringing together a group of individuals, from  stakeholder groups in Monroe County whose work incorporates diverse aspects of play within (for example):

Business
Community Physicians
Child Life Specialists
Early Childhood
Educators
Gerontology
Mental Health
Parent Groups
Recreation
Researcher
Youth Workers

Our plan is to send out a "Save the Date" email this fall. If you are interested in receiving an invitation to the  Taking Play Seriously  Community Forum, please forward your contact information (name, address, phone and email address) to:

This initial forum will be held early in 2012 at the Strong Museum of Play.  The stakeholders will help us to identify potential themes for the promotion of play to inform a regional conference being planned for the Fall of 2012.
