Founder and Artistic Director, Magbana Drum and Dance NYC
President, Wula Drum
As a musician, artistic director and educator, Michael Markus has spent over twenty years studying Classical, American, African-American, Brazilian, Afro-Cuban, and West African styles of drumming. As a student of movement, he has immersed himself in the dances of West Africa and studied Chinese martial arts. Along with a BFA in percussion, he has mentored with accomplished master indigenous artists and travels almost yearly to Guinea. In addition to administrating, directing and performing with Magbana Drum and Dance NYC, Michael is a visionary and charismatic teacher of drum and dance workshops throughout the United States and Canada. In 2004, Michael co-produced and released a CD of his group, Magbana, as well as a series of 11 educational percussion CDs of rhythms from Guinea. As a world music clinician, he has presented at versatile venues ranging from college music and dance departments to inner city community centers. He has regularly developed and conducted workshops for such nationally recognized events as The Percussive Arts Society International Conventions and The Woodwind and the Brasswind Percussion Clinics. He has also created commissioned pieces, composing and directing choreography for such groups as Ethos Percussion, which debuted his work at the Symphony Space in New York City. Poetry-reading fund-raiser for Japanese Relief
A grassroots poetry-reading fund-raiser
for Japanese Relief
Thursday, March 24th
7:30 until 9:30/10:00 PM
Java's
16 Gibbs Street
Rochester (between Main & East)
next to the Eastman School of Music,
near the Eastman Theatre
Sign-in for the event begins at 7 PM and each poet will be allotted approximately 5 minutes to read for which we suggest a $5.00 donation (more if you wish). All funds raised will benefit Japanese relief efforts through the Red Cross.
In terms of poetry to be read, we would like to to avoid "me-based" poetry, and rants about broken-hearted lovers or war. Subject matter should be " appropriate for the time at hand," however it need not be specifically about the recent tragedies.
The reading will most likely be telethon like-in style, with commentary about the event and appeals for support between every three poets or so. If you're not a poet, but have visited Japan or have friends or relatives who have been affected by the earthquakes and flooding there, you may want to grab five minutes to chat about that.
Also as a special treat, Ying Quartet violinist Ayano Ninomya has also graciously agreed to play a violin solo and will probably perform around 8:30 PM
Naturally, since this is a fund-raising event, we would also like to drum up some folks to be an "audience" -- even if only for a small part of the event. So encourage your family and friends to stop by and throw in a couple of dollars or a pocket full of change into the "collection basket." This is an attempt for poets to make a strong humanitarian stand.
We do know that there are a number of competing events that night, but if you could spare even a few minutes to drop by it would be much appreciated.

ABOUT Art at The Armory:
(Read more on the ABOUT page at www.ArtatTheArmory.com.)
Art at The Armory is the two-day fine art Show and Sale, broadly nature-themed, that is moving into the grand space of Rochester’s spectacular Main Street Armory arena. Fifty or more artists will personally exhibit their artworks, filling a niche within Greater Rochester’s richly diverse arts community with the showcasing of nature-themed fine artistry in all its forms. Back by popular demand, Live Owls and Hawks will take the main stage three times each day, awing us with their beauty and helping to educate us about the wonders of nature which inspire the art, the artists, and the theme of our Show. For the further enjoyment of our patrons, the Armory’s food and beverage menus will feature seasonal specials such as homemade soups and chili, and Finger Lakes wines. Commencing the day after Veterans’ Day, the Show will honor military and CAP personnel with specially priced admission (FREE for those in uniform). Admission to the Show also is specially priced for seniors, students, and families.
FROM THE SHOW DIRECTOR:
“We hope the entire Greater Rochester community shares in our excitement about what’s ahead for Art at The Armory — our 3rd annual event which has been renamed for its new venue. Our Show began humbly with a handful of talented artists, and has quickly outgrown its previous location. We are super excited to be moving the Show to the awesome Main Street Armory, in Rochester’s eastside art district.”
– David Semple, Show & Education Director
